By On Thursday, September 22, a 17-year-old teenager from Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, was charged for a cyber-attack on Rockstar Games. The attack leaked footage of the company’s brand new game, Grand Theft Auto 6. Reports say over 90 videos and screens regarding the game were leaked, and the reports point toward the teenager.
The 17-year-old who was charged initially for suspicion of not only leaking GTA 6 official videos and screens but also conducting a cyber-attack on Uber has officially been charged with the offenses. Even though the police have yet to confirm the arrest, many journalists believe that the teen has already been arrested. The same teenager was also charged and arrested for hacking tech giants Microsoft and Nvidia in earlier 2022.
There were initial rumors that the teen from Oxfordshire was part of a hacking group named “Lapsus$,” and many believe this to be true. The City of London Police confirmed on Thursday, September 22, that the 17-year-old was arrested on two counts of breach of bail conditions and two counts of computer misuse by the National Cyber Crime Unit. They also confirmed that he had been charged in regards to the GTA 6 leaks and remains in custody.
The leak was also confirmed by Rockstar Games, who gave an official statement regarding it and expressed their disappointment. Rockstar Games posted on Twitter stating, “We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto,” following this they added, “We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way. Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned, and we remain committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.”
Even though the data leak disappointed not only Rockstar Games but also many gamers who felt that the “charm” of the game had been compromised, many game developers were very excited about how the game was made and what other things we can expect from GTA 6 in the future.
