Google and Airtel Tackle RCS Spam in India Together

0

Google’s Rich Communication Services (RCS) platform has been under siege by spammers in India, and the tech giant is stepping up its defense strategy by joining forces with India’s telecom heavyweight, Bharti Airtel. This partnership, aimed at integrating Airtel’s network-level spam filtering with Google’s RCS platform, marks a significant move to curb unsolicited messages and fraud.

Why India is a Hotspot for RCS Spam

India’s vast mobile user base, coupled with a surge in digital payment systems and enterprise marketing, has made it a fertile ground for messaging spam. In fact, the problem became so pronounced in 2022 that Google had to halt business promotions on RCS in the country temporarily. But spam complaints persisted, leaving users frustrated with unwanted messages flooding their Google Messages app.

The Technical Collaboration: A Global First

Airtel, having reservations initially about joining Google’s RCS network, decided to proceed only after ensuring that its robust spam control measures could be integrated effectively. By combining Airtel’s network intelligence with Google’s RCS technology, the partnership aims to perform real-time checks on business messages, verifying senders, detecting spam, and enforcing ‘do-not-disturb’ preferences for users.

Sameer Samat, Google’s Android ecosystem president, hinted that this model, showcasing deeper carrier integration, could potentially extend globally to bolster RCS security.

Measuring the Impact and Engagement

The success of this initiative should ideally reflect in the reduction of spam volumes and user complaints, alongside an enhancement in legitimate message engagement. Prabhu Ram from CyberMedia Research emphasized the importance of quantitative results in judging the collaboration’s efficacy.

Airtel has been proactive in the anti-spam crusade, blocking over 71 billion spam calls and nearly 3 billion spam messages through AI-driven systems, contributing significantly to fraud reduction in financial transactions.

RCS: The Successor to SMS?

Positioning RCS as the SMS successor, Google has already been managing over a billion RCS messages daily in the U.S. Yet, more markets are to join the expanded filter network, with no concrete timelines for this rollout shared yet. As the RCS ecosystem grows, integrating carrier-level protections seems to be a pivotal strategy in creating a seamless and secure messaging experience.

For a market as critical as India, with over 700 million smartphone users, collaborations like these could set a precedent for securing digital communications globally.
