Apple Selling Faulty Butterfly Keyboards up to $395 to Macbook Owners

0

Apple has finally addressed the sticky keyboard issues that have affected its Mac laptops in recent years, but there’s a catch: If your keyboard is bad, you can only get it replaced if none of the keys are working at all. The butterfly keyboards came out in 2016, but MacBook owners have reported that their keys stop working after just a few months of use.

Users sued Apple over the faulty laptop tops, and the company was forced to start a repair program last year to address the issue. The company has also started another replacement program to let users get their faulty keyboards replaced for free under certain conditions.

In an internal memo sent to Apple stores and authorized service centers earlier this month, obtained by Motherboard, Apple said that it would be replacing butterfly keyboards for free on eligible laptops for four years after the first sale of the unit.

Apple Macbooks Keyboard Replacement Policy

If your keyboard is bad, you can only get it replaced if none of the keys are working at all. If your keyboard is only partially defective and some keys still work, you won’t be able to get that part replaced either.

Apple’s policy on replacing faulty butterfly keyboards has been a hot topic among Mac owners since early 2018, when Apple first began selling its laptops with this design. Still, now the company is finally addressing the sticky keyboard issues that have affected its Macbooks in recent years. It’s even stricter about how much patience customers should have before sending their laptops in for repairs.

Issues with Butterfly Keyboards

The butterfly keyboard is the most important part of your laptop, as it allows you to type without looking at the keys. Apple’s butterfly keyboards have been around for over a decade, but now reports are coming in that they’re having problems with sticky keys.

The issue with this is that when you press down on a key, it can’t be released and will stick until you press another key or pull out your finger from underneath the key. This problem happens with all MacBook models using this type of keyboard: MacBook Pro 13″, 15″, 17″, and Pro Retina 15″.

Apple Repair Policy For Pissed Users

In December, a group of users sued Apple over the faulty laptop tops, and the company was forced to start a repair program last year to address the issue. The case is still ongoing in California state court.

Apple said that it had determined that its keyboards were not defective due to “a variety of causes including dust accumulation inside keycaps,” according to court documents filed by Apple on Monday.

It went on to say that if users did have issues with their keyboard tops, then they should contact Apple Support immediately so they could receive replacement parts or even ask for a refund after contacting them directly about their concerns through telephone calls or e-mail messages.

Solution for Your Faulty Macbook Butterfly Keyboard

If your Macbook’s keyboard stops working within the next four years, you should visit an authorized repair shop. You can’t do it yourself, and there are no refunds or replacements. Only Apple will replace the keyboard if it has stopped working due to a defect in materials or workmanship. If this happens, Apple will send you a replacement keyboard at no charge (excluding shipping).

This is the first major update to Apple’s butterfly keyboard since its release in 2016. It will be interesting to see how it affects sales, but if you’re still using your old laptop and have been experiencing problems with its keyboard, now may be the time to get yourself a new one.
